If you are looking for smart security cameras for wonderful low prices, look no further than Zmodo. Founded only 12 years ago in 2009, the company has sold over eight million devices1, including security cameras, systems, and other smart home accoutrements. But looking at their website, It is hard to see which camera is the best option, as many different models are available (seven, to be exact). That is a problem because only 45% of millennials, 27% of Gen X, and 12% of baby boomers have a home security installed! We have tested each Zmodo camera, and boy, we have a lot to say.  Protect your home or business with the Zmodo Wireless Security Camera System. This surveillance system comes with a 1080p HD camera and night vision to see up to 65ft away in the dark, plus two indoor/outdoor weatherproof cameras and necessary mounting equipment. Setup is super easy using the free Zmodo App that works with Alexa and Google Assistant. You can remotely view it anywhere with an iPhone, iPad, or PC. Plus, receive motion alerts via push notifications to your smartphone when motion is detected, so you will never miss a thing!

Enjoy peace of mind, no worry about where you are, and be notified when something should be happening.

What You Get With Any Zmodo Camera

Zmodo Outdoor Security Camera
Zmodo Outdoor Security Camera

Zmodo’s security cameras are beautiful and different from one another, but they all divide a few key elements:

Field of Zoom

Want to capture those small details like someone’s face? With all of Zmodo’s cameras, we zoomed in digitally on the Zmodo application four times, leaving nothing in on our family and friends’ faces. While fortunately, we did not have an interference while testing our cameras, we know that if we did, the footage we received would work as evidence in a trial.

Storage Options for Zmodo Security Cameras

Basic 7 Day Plan 30 Day Plan
Alert clips for past 12 hours Yes No No
Days of alert clip storage 0 7 30
Pay per Camera (additional camera subscriptions 50% off) No No Yes
Monthly Cost $0 $4.99 $9.99
Yearly Cost $0 $49.90 $99.90
Yearly Savings $0 $10 $20

When it came to storing that recording, Zmodo Outdoor Security Camera Wireless were uniform. Zmodo’s security cameras gave us 12 hours of storage for free, but we didn’t think that was enough; after all, what if we were busy all day and didn’t have time to download our clips and back them up onto local storage? We upgraded the plan to a week of clouds storage for only $4.99 a month, although it would’ve been cheaper had we signed up for a year. We selected the image clips we wanted to keep and download to phone, later transferring them to our computer.

Note: Be sure to back up your footage regularly! If clouds storage fails, it’s important to have your footage stored somewhere else, a micro-SD card, flash drive, or hard drive.

Motion Detection

Zmodo Outdoor Security Camera Wireless alerted us via the Zmodo application when they detected motion. For our indoor security cameras, this was fine, as there is not much going on at our apartment when we are not home, individual pet-less. But for our outdoor security cameras, we got alerted a lot during the day. As we live in New York City, there is always a ton of motion outside, from building to traffic to pigeons decorating our front stoop, so the notifications were not always the most required. We hope at least some of their cameras offered human being detection like the Nest Cam IQ Outdoor, meaning we had only received alerts when there is an real human detected. However, if you live in a more comfortable environment, this may not be as big of a problem.

The Zmodo Application

Zmodo Outdoor Security Camera
Zmodo Outdoor Security Camera

It does not matter which Zmodo camera you buy; we used the Zmodo app to control it remotely, available for iOS and Android phones. We must say that the Android application worked much better than the iPhone app; we noticed a pretty big lag between motion and our notifications on our iPhone. We also found it difficult to see old footage on this application.

Not to hit in the point too hard, but we live in NYC, the city that never sleeps, and that applies to us. With days used up running to catch the subway for conversation, remembering to arm and disarm security cameras in the morning and evening can feel like a slog. Fortunately, we set all of Zmodo security cameras to associate while we leave for work every morning at (8:30 AM, to be exact) and disarm when we normally get home around at 7:30 PM. Of course, we stayed at the gym a little longer on the day, we went into the Zmodo app and made adjustments so that our cameras would stay armed a bit longer, but for most days, schedules made it easy to keep our apartment safe with minimal effort.

How Zmodo Outdoor Security Camera Wireless Differ

Now we discuss the main features.

Motion Zones

Motion zones were a big help to us in terms of reducing the number of false notifications we received from motion, especially with our outdoor security cameras. In the Zmodo application, we drew a line separating the area from the sidewalk and street. Once we did that, we only received notification of movement in our real “front yard” place, if you could call our patch of actual that. Instead of getting barraged with notifications all day, motion zones allowed us to only received notification when our mail was dispatched or when our dog walker came over. However, not all of Zmodo’s security cameras had this feature the Torch 360 and Snap PT, for example, did not have motion zones, but we were glad that most of their security cameras do.

Smart Home Integrations

What is a smart security camera without a voice assistant to match? We tested out all of Zmodo’s security cameras except the dome camera and the Torch 360 work with Alexa and Google Assistant.

The Alexa skill was attractively limited, although we could tell the voice assistant to display our cameras’ footage on Echo Show, which was beautiful. When we wanted to stop streaming, with the help, we had Alexa do it for us, and when we tried to turn our security cameras completely off, again, we turned to Alexa. However, we could not arm or disarm cameras using Alexa, which was a little of a shame.

With the help of Google Assistant, we had the same capabilities, but in its place of the Echo Show, we had our Nest Hub show our Zmodo recording, plus a couple more commands; we asked Google Assistant which cameras were on and could turn them on and off, not just off like Alexa.

Our Advice: While the majority of Zmodo Outdoor Security Camera Wireless work with Google Assistant and Alexa, we suggest them for someone in the Google system rather than the Amazon system for a few more hands-free commands.

Two-Way Audio

Most of the smart security cameras we test these days have two-way audio enabled by built-in speakers and microphones. Zmodo Outdoor Security Camera Wireless were no exception, save for the 1080p HD Indoor/ Outdoor WiFi security camera, the 720p Indoor Dome security camera and Torch 360. With all the other security cameras, we spoke to whoever our security cameras were on remotely through the Zmodo application, which was very convenient, especially when we were out of town and using house sitters. And since we received many packages delivered throughout the day, because who has time to shop in person, it was convenient to be alerted exactly when the delivery men stopped by. We could speak to them about where to place our goods, and they could talk back!

Night Vision

All of Zmodo’s security cameras have infrared night vision, save for the Torch 360, perhaps their most unique camera, which has colour night vision. Infrared night visions meant that, for the most part, nighttime footage with Zmodo’s cameras was in black and white but still pretty clear. But with the Torch 360, our night vision was full colour due to the camera’s bright bulb. While it is a cool idea to have a camera and a torchlight in one, we found that the bulb only brought more attention to the security camera, which, if we have an invasion, makes it more likely that the security camera will be broken or even stolen. We prefer security cameras with infrared LED sensors, which are almost completely unnoticeable in the dark of night.

Video Quality

Video Quality, these are cameras we are talking about, and this isn’t a video game from the 1980s; we want clear and not super pixelated footage. For the most part, our Zmodo security cameras’ footage was clear at 1080p HD, which we have come to expect from security cameras in the year 2022. However, we see that with the dome camera, you guessed it, the Torch 360, the footage was not as clear at only 720p HD. Of course, we could still receive a general idea of what was happening, but the security cameras with 1080p HD displays had more detail.

Field of View

The video quality was generally the same on our Zmodo security cameras, their fields of view were all over the place. That is how wide the shot is, and in general, we like fields of view of 120 degrees or above; otherwise, the footage is so short that not all of the space is covered. We were happiest with the Sight 180 security cameras, which have 180-degree fields of view, hence the name. That is as large as possible (notwithstanding security cameras that rotate all the way around). However, we were still satisfied with the field of view on the Zmodo’s Snap PT, the Torch 360, and the Pivot Cloud, at 151-degrees, 132-degrees, and 120-degrees, respectively.

The only cameras that showed us a sliver of what we wanted were the 1080p HD Indoor/ Outdoor WiFi camera at only 90-degrees and the 720p Indoor Dome camera at 114-degrees. Especially with the former, we had to include multiple cameras per room to get the coverage we wanted, which was a bit hard on our wallets.

When it came to powering our Zmodo security cameras, we plugged in about half of them and powered the other half by battery specifically, we plugged in the 1080p HD Indoor/ Outdoor WiFi security camera, both of the view 180 cameras, and the Torch 360. The rest were wireless, which intended that, while we occasionally had to replace or recharge the batteries, there were no untidy wires ruining our apartment’s minimalist-chic aesthetic. It also meant that fitting was simplified, but we’ll get to that later.

One major drawback of Zmodo’s security cameras is that most are planned only for indoor use, save for the 1080p HD Indoor/ Outdoor WiFi security camera. Still, the Torch 360 needs to be covered when used outside; the rest is placed indoors.

For some reason, Zmodo only sells most of its outdoor cameras in really large packages, so it’s not the best place to buy outdoor cameras. On the other hand, the ring has a few affordable options like the Ring Stick Up Cam Battery or the Ring Spotlight Cam Battery, to name a couple of wireless options, so we recommend that over Zmodo’s extensive systems; unless you have a very large property to monitor.

Please show me the money! One actually good thing about the Zmodo camera is the super-low prices. We bought our cheapest security camera for just under $40, and even the most expensive was only bought for $199 with the Snap PT. While that is a little expensive for an indoor camera (usually around $100 to $150), the price made a lot more sense when we saw that the camera came with door/ window sensors.

Zmodo is one of the more reasonably priced smart security options out there, so for those on a budget, you will be just as delighted with their low prices as we were. Ranging from approximately $40 to $200, Zmodo is known for making smart security affordable as it is advanced level.

We have tested out a lot of security cameras, and some of Zmodo’s have features we’ve never seen before, like built-in Bluetooth speakers! Let’s go into specifics.

wish for the most coverage possible? Yes, The Torch 360,the Sight 180, and the Snap PT can all turn all the way around, making setting up much more flexible; we were not as joined to their fields of view, so we had more liberty with anywhere we installed them. On top of that, the Snap PT too tilted, but only 15-degrees which was nice-looking negligible.

Similarly, the Pivot Cloud rotates 350 degrees, almost full exposure. Especially for the Torch 360, which we used outside in a torchlight, we had total arrange of where our camera was pointing. If we wanted to observe the street, we could, but if we wanted to focus on our front door, we could do that, too. We felt like the FBI, carefully surveilling everything around our camera through the Zmodo app.

Door/Window Sensors

Some of Zmod’s security cameras, like the Pivot Cloud and the Snap PT, came with door/ window sensors, which we used to observe when our doors and windows were opened or closed. This was helpful to know, useful to know, and the sensors were all wireless and connected to the Zmodo app, allowing us to get alerts.

Environmental Monitoring

The Pivot Cloud did more than watch our central lobby. It also told us the temperature and moisture intensity, which was unexpected. The only other camera have reviewed with environmental monitoring built-in is the indoor Canary Pro, which tacks on air quality, temperature and humidity.

However, we establish these features slightly unnecessary, especially because these cameras are indoor use; it would have been nicer to recognize what it is like outside rather than inside, where we have control of our environment through our Nest Learning Thermostat. Still, this may be a plus point for people who want to be trained more about their indoor environment.

Bluetooth speakers

The Pivot Cloud and the Snap PT have built-in Bluetooth speakers, which is another trait we don’t typically encounter with smart cameras. For us, that meant flashing the new Fiona Apple album from our central hallway camera so the entire apartment could hear it and playing podcasts when we were safe to eat. While we already own a few different smart speakers like the Nest Mini and the Echo Dot with Clock, now, with these two security cameras from Zmodo, we have placed smart speakers in almost every room of our apartment.

Finally, we are back to the Torch 360, the most unique of all of Zmodo’s security camera offerings. This security camera has a bulb on it in our torchlight, but on special occasions like Halloween or Valentine’s Day, we changed the bulb’s color to make it more festive.

When we didn’t feel like creating our themes, we turned to the premade options in the Zmodo app, and we could even put the bulb on schedules so it didn’t waste power during the daytime. We have not seen any other security cameras designed to fit in a torchlight, so this was a pretty good option.

Zmodo security camera setup

We installed all of our Zmodo security cameras ourselves, which, good news for our wallets, meant we didn’t have to pay a dollar to install our home security. For the most part, the setup process with each camera was the same; once we had the Zmodo app downloaded and an account created, we connected each to our WiFi system, which we had to do in the same room as our router.

We had to plug them in for the plug-in cameras to do this, even if they weren’t in the ultimate location that we wanted them in. The in-application setup tutorials were helpful and told us how to set devices in Zink (we could do multiple at once, which was suitable).

Once all the security cameras were set up in our app, connected to WiFi and named, we placed the cameras where we wanted them, which, for the indoor cameras, meant putting them on high shelves. Of course, things were different with the Torch 360, which we had to screw into our old torchlight. But overall, the process did not take more than 10 minutes per camera, and Zmodo security camera setup provided some helpful Youtube videos when we were having trouble.

Which Zmodo Camera Is Perfect For You?

We had recommended getting one of Zmodo’s security cameras, save for the dome camera, which is not doing us any favors with its 720p HD. Even the Torch 360 has the same video result, we can’t imagine a better security solution if you have a torchlight. Your selection will finally come down to your exact needs.

While Zmodo has few outdoor options, we suggest checking out their indoor cameras unless you want to invest in a superior system. No matter which choice you choose, Zmodo provides smart home security at a portion of the cost of competitors, a great chance for anyone on a budget.

Final words

The Zmodo’s Wireless Security Camera System (2 Pack) is a nice solution for keeping an eye on your home or business. The system includes two 1080p HD security cameras, but it also works with up to 16 cameras at once. This means that you can monitor almost any area of the home, from just about any device that you have on hand. The main concern is compatibility with Alexa, which we mention above and below. However, keep in mind that there’s no shortage of options if you don’t want to use Alexa or Google Assistant. If you like Zmodo’s camera, please buy it from our link; we get a small amount, and the price you will pay is the same as the actual price.
